Review of This Is Spinal Tap (1984) by Steven P — 02 Mar 2011
Marty DiBergi: Why don't you make ten a little louder, make that the top number and make that a little louder?
Nigel Tufnel: [pauses] These go to eleven.
This is Spinal Tap is my favorite rock and roll movie, and is still the biting piece of satire that it was 27 years ago. It also has the honor of being one of my favorite movies.
Rob Reiner has one of the jewels of his directing career here, he himself assuming the persona of Marty DiBergi to chronicle the fictional band Spinal Tap on the launch of their album "Smell The Glove" and its subsequent tour.
Even in this day and age, the satire of virtually every element of the music industry still holds up. There are some great gags about things that everyone knows about rock and roll.
I would definitely recommend watching this movie if you want to feel good about yourself.
David Saint Hubbins: No, I don't think it was because we felt down, I think it was fear that our Stonehenge was in danger of being crushed...by a dwarf.
