Review of This Is Not a Film (2011) by Paul J — 08 Oct 2011
Lars Von Trier & John Cassavetes would be proud. In this seemingly simple exercise in cinematic defiance, the filmmakers manage to explore what it means to make movies. It's a subject worthy of Bergman, Kiarostami and Godard.
The film is heartfelt, insightful and humorous. The modesty and rebellious nature of the artist is moving and empowering. Despite his 20 year ban and house arrest, the filmmaker can't help but try and make movies.
Censorship in Iran is ridiculously archaic and the only reason we are able to see this masterpiece is because it was smuggled into France inside a cake. It manages to answer why it's necessary to make films while also being an astonishing act of defiance.
A totally political yet aspirational examination of artistic expression. Plus, we see Igi the Iguana just wanting to cuddle. I never thought a lizard could be so cute.
