Review of This Is Not a Film (2011) by Niloo R — 31 May 2012
This was a really interesting film - panahi is clearly very passionate about filmmaking and he's pretty likeable on camera as well. it's really heartbreaking to see how passionate he is about making films and how much it's killing him that he can't - to think of all the screenplays that he wrote which weren't approved makes me realize how easy the rest of us have it here and how much we take for granted.
it's also impressive to see that with all the restrictions against him, panahi still managed to make a name for himself on the world stage. in all the film, in all it's simplicity was heartbreaking, flecked with bits of humour which somehow made it even sadder, but at times felt a bit contrived and self-involved.
