Review of This Is England (2007) by Alan B — 18 Feb 2009
Saw this on FilmFour the other day. While for me it seemed to lose its way at the end, and one character's melt-down was a little heavy-handed, it was a superbly made film - calling to mind Alan Clarke and Ken Loach (I've no doubt Meadows is an admirer).
The period in which it was set was lovingly recreated and authentic, the naturalistic performances were affecting and some of the psychology and confusion underlying nationalistic racism were mostly convincingly laid out.
