Review of This Is England (2007) by Trevor H — 09 Jan 2010
F you lived in the grim north of England through the 80s then this film will resonate strongly with you. They were remarkable times, thousands of police and coal miners fighting in open battle, people dying weekly, over industrial rights and unrest.
It's a powerful tale of 12 year old Shaun, brilliantly played by Thomas Turgoose, who is coopted into a skinhead gang and through his experiences tries to come to terms with the death of his father.
Thatcher, the Falklands War, the miners' strike, all are held up in stark reality for what they were. The beauty of this film though, is the way in which it portrays the pleasant, musical, harmless side to skinheads, although having said that, I thought the soundtrack could have included some ska.
Great film.
