Review of This Is England (2007) by Alex C — 14 Jun 2010
An eye-opening, gritty and thought-provoking British film from acclaimed director Shane Meadows, This Is England tells the tale of 80's Britian, and revolves around a young and troubled boy who's life changes when we joins a gang of local non-racist and charismatic skinheads, even adopting the dress code. But the gang soon becomes divided and things turn nasty.
Thomas Turgoose shines in his role as bullied-at-school turned skinhead youngster Shaun, while Stephen Graham excels as the violent Combo amidst a backdrop 80's England, Meadows montaging what made England exciting back then (CDs, punks, the blasted Rubikâ??s Cube) with what made it fearful (riots, strikes, war). As a nostalgic glimpse of 1983, itâ??s immaculate.
