Review of This Is England (2007) by Paul B — 16 May 2011
This is a pitch perfect look at England in the 1980's, at least from what I can remember. The whole film has a theme of innocence lost, as Shaun is seduced by a charasmatic skinhead who makes him believel the anger and frustration he feels toward the world is natural and teaches him to channel it into hate to further his own misguided racist agenda, leading to a horrific event that will leave them both scarred beyond repair.
Everytime I watch this I forget how it seems like two films, one a feel good almost comedy and the second half a tragic drama about hate. I'm always affected by the the relationship between Combo and Shaun because it feels real and it's easy to understand how both characters have been misled to get to that point.
It's funny, smart and thought provoking plus if you want something that might give you a little cry this could be the one.
