Review of This Is England (2007) by Seany B — 19 Jan 2012
One of the best films of the 2000s. Exploring Thatcher's Britain and the beginning of her social legacy, this film goes deeper than a political statement. It explores the root of hard hitting issues which plague our society today and the face behind them.
We see characters who would conventionally be considered antagonists as real people, with real feelings and vulnerability, sprinkled with a generous helping of humour and shock factor. Far more dramatic and deeper than its American counterpart 'American History X', this film has such immense character depth it drowns me.
Despite the large amount of central characters, each gets their moment of character development. This isn't a film, or even a social documentary- it's a work of art.
