Review of This Is England (2007) by Andrew D — 11 Apr 2012
I have been told for years I need to see This Is England, but never got round to it. I now regret that, as the film was brilliant. Before Iâ(TM)d seen it, Iâ(TM)d thought Dead Manâ(TM)s Shoes was one of the best British films ever. Now, This Is England is one of the best British films ever. There was some great nostalgic moments involved, very enjoyable to watch with a smile on my face, then mixed with terrifying moments.
Thomas Turgoose is the main actor, and extremely impressive as the young Shaun, desperate for a friend, and maybe more so, a father figure, first being drawn to the loving surrogate brother of Woody, before being drawn to the angry and hateful Combo. Shaun is the center piece of the film, and he carries it very well for a novice. However, whilst he may be the main performer, he is backed up by several solid performers, all regulars it seems of Shane Meadows films.
Woody and Lol made a great couple who I really liked in their almost surrogate parents role, very lovable. As well as their best friend Milky, who is also a great personality. In fact, pretty much every character included is impressive. But, as impressive as they are, the one who steals the film, is Combo, played by Stephen Graham. He is terrifying, a true tour de force, his very presence unnerving the audience and leading to possibly the most uncomfortable scene, when Milky invites him to a meal. A magnificent performance from Graham, in an overall magnificent film.
