Review of This Is England (1941) by Robin H — 30 Sep 2009
BLOODY-ELL. Wasn't expecting much, and this knocked me right on my ass. Rarely can a film turn so quickly from endearment to sharp and disturbing focus. You'll be oddly heartwarmed one second, and the next you can't help but feel uneasy and start to think things over - much like the relationship between Shaun and Smelly in the movie, on one level it's absolutely touching, on another you're wondering what the heck is going on.
Highly recommended.
