Review of This Is 40 (2012) by Jay R — 15 Oct 2013
This is film from a man that seems to try his hardest to make life's ultimate struggles into heart warming comedies. However, this time things take a turn for the awkward. This is 40 follows a married couple that hit the point in life where it just might not seem worth it anymore.
All couples go through rough patches. It's a surefire as the sun coming up tomorrow. However, this film attempts to show the consequences of letting it get too far. And that's where the film hits the awkward moments.
Director Judd Apatow decided to cast his wife and two daughters in the film as mother and daughters, so the fights and arguments have an extremely uncomfortable feel to them because they feel real. The actors do well, but outside of dated references and poor jokes, they don't have much to work with.
And the same goes with the celebrity cameos. The film runs too long and the message gets muddled under poor jokes. Overall, this was a missed opportunity at what could have been a heartfelt comedy.
