Review of This Is 40 (2012) by Brett H — 27 Mar 2014
One of the most miserable and unappealing "comedies" I've ever seen and despite a talented cast and a once-promising writer/director, I just couldn't wait for it to be over. Judd Apatow can't rein himself in and make a normal comedy runtime which is strike 1, he has to let his actors ad-lib and grind a joke to dust, and strike 3; he can't help but cast his god-awful annoying wife.
I put off watching this for so long because I heard it was a drag, but I will admit that in the beginning I was smiling and laughing because I genuinely like seeing Paul Rudd on screen. But for the majority of this movie I sat stone-faced and realized that I'm over Judd Apatow's brand of comedy, unless he can get his head on straight and trim some serious fat on his films.
