Review of This Gun for Hire (1942) by Ricardo O — 09 Nov 2011
Adapted from Graham Greene's novel, This Gun for Hire is one of the quintessential noirs. Along with the previous year's The Maltese Falcon, this film did a lot to help define genre. Good plot, good direction, excellent cinematography, and one can understand why the pairing of Alan Ladd and Veronica Lake were so successful; they oozed with chemistry.
This was obviously a big influence on Jean-Pierre Melville's neo-noir masterpiece Le Samouraï. Recommended viewing. 8/10.
