Many people just assume that the ratings system for movies is a governmental regulation. In actuality, it's a voluntary, secretive system run by the film industry which provides extra hurdles for indie films, while paving the way for films pimped by the major film studios.

Without the MPAA seal of approval, many films are essentially "killed", by being relegated to small indie theaters, limited release, and advertising restrictions. This documentary does a great job at pointing out the blatant hypocrisy of the MPAA.

However, like many documentaries, it does become rather sanctimonious. Many points feel as if you're merely listening to stories of people who've had films rejected, and who hold a grudge. However, it's difficult to deny that a.

) Indie films are rated much tougher than big-budget releases, and b.) Violence is far more permissible than sex to the ratings board. An enlightening film to watch, but come prepared for some preaching.
