Review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) by A B — 22 Feb 2009
Interesting look at the MPAA ratings system. The film features detectives trying to find the identities of the secret raters as well as interviews with directors whose movies were given the NC-17 rating.
The film's makers conclude that the ratings are a form of moral censorship unfairly applied and call for standardization and guidelines in rating. As evidence several scenes are shown that are nearly identical but received differing ratings when they are included in movies who's plot deals with homosexuality. Also discussed is the American tendency to pass graphic violence as R or even PG-13 while making even sometmes implied sexual activities NC-17.
The DVD extas include several interesting discussions by filmmakers. As they reveal the shocking information that the MPAA pirated a copy of the movie.
