Review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) by Jacob N — 20 May 2010
Since this is a documentary, I won't be critiquing performances or writing, but all I have to say is, see this film. This exposes the MPAA for what it truly is, a censorship board and nothing more.
I had no idea the dirty dealing and fear mongering that this organization dealt in, but after watching this film I feel this is a must see for anyone who cares about the state of film, censorship, and art in general in America.
Eye opening to say the very least. I considered myself fairly savvy when it came to movies and film, but I really didn't know the half of what happens when a movie goes to get rated. Yes, there is nudity in this film, yes there are lots of "bad words" if there are such a thing, but no, it is not the MPAA or anyone else's job to see to it that writers and directors fall in line and do as they insist.
At times during the film it almost seems as if the MPAA is trying to dictate the social norms to Americans through film. Disturbing and compelling, I would consider this an important movie, and it's also fairly entertaining.
Kirby Dick does write well and expresses his points succinctly and humorously. If he had delivered this film in a more somber fashion, it could almost be considered an alarmist movie. As is, I found myself chuckling at parts that I really shouldn't have, but he really drives his point home in a way anyone can understand.
Fair warning, if you are a prude, ultra-conservative, or offended by the human body, don't see it, it'll just offend you and you'll miss the point. If you consider yourself a proponent of freedom of expression and can see a breast without getting your panties in a twist, see this movie.
Soon.
