Review of This Film Is Not Yet Rated (2006) by Eulalia B — 02 Aug 2010
Having come of age with the media wanting to protect me from the good, bad and ugly (ie: parental advisory stickers, NC-17 rating, etc) I was particularly interested in seeing how they come up with what is 'unsafe' for the youth.
First off I have fond memories of seeing films like NC-17 rated Kids and buying parental advisory stickered CDS (okay some tapes) of rapper turn kid friendly filmmaker Ice Cube (who would of thunk it).
This film was definitely an eye opener on the sometimes arcane (ie - missionary position, etc), conveniently arbitrary film rating and appeal process. While I have often felt more offended by the violence done to women in films (I'm talking just sheer physical violence that you find in horror flicks geared towards teens).
..I'm not sure if the crux of the filmaker's (Kirby) argument (that MPAA rating board are anti female pleasure, anti-gay, anit-independent filmmaker) was proven. Partly this is because the MPAA's rating system seems so arbitrary and beyond reproach.
However, for any film aficionado this worth the time and energy to rent and watch.
