Review of This Boy's Life (1993) by Robert C — 01 Oct 2006
This movie has got to have one of my favourite roles De Niro has ever played... He is intimidating and pathetic and can only validate himself is by putting everyone else down. You really don't like him in this as he is the typical bully character.
He plays it swimmingly and he also masters the northwest accent, to the extent I couldn't stop watching him. Combine that with DiCaprio and the way the chemisty bounces off between the two... if you were never a fan of Leonardo you would be now.
.. together they make this movie unforgettable. It almost becomes like a spectator sport as DiCaprio's performance as a mixed up teenager delinquent really has to make De Niro hold his own. Every performance in this movie was perfect.
The atmosphere captured me and as it tightens towards the end only to have a liberating and happy ending was kinda emotional. Personally the best bit was when the testosterone was flying and DiCaprio and De Niro fight in the kitchen at the end.
.. as if you couldn't not sit on the edge of your seat wanting De Niro's teeth kicked in. In a word... Wow.
