Review of Thirteen Days (2000) by T.a. P — 23 Jun 2008
A tense portrayal of the Cuban missile crisis. Great casting for JFK and Bobby, played by Bruce Greenwood and Steven Culp, respectively. However, the policy of mutual assured destruction isn't really questioned as being outright insane by the film, which forsakes criticism for hand-wringing and contemplative head-resting.
Costner's Bostonian accent is grating, but forgivable as he attempts to reconcile hawk military abandon and realpolitik. Overall, it's okay if you want to watch toothless political intrigue, but for reflective, critical insight about the Cuban missile crisis (among other things), I suggest Errol Morris' The Fog of War.
