Review of Thirteen Days (2000) by Barbara M — 20 Jun 2009
Kevin Costner single-handedly saves the world.
A very interesting topic, with a well written script. Good acting by Bruce Greenwood as JFK and Steven Culp as RFK. Should have been an easy join-the-dots movie, with massive appeal, especially to history buffs like myself.
However, the movie is set back by Kevin Costner taking on himself (and he is one of the producers) to portray his character, Kenny O'Donnell, as the hero of the piece. You even get the feeling that O'Donnell was more important than JFK and RFK in the context of the crisis, which, as history shows and logic would dictate, he wasn't. O'Donnell was JFK's special adviser and chief-of-staff (in everything but name) and that was it.
His clearly fake accent doesn't help either.
So, once again, a movie with potential hamstrung by the limited acting abilities of Kevin Costner.
