Review of Thirteen Days (2000) by Josef H — 27 Oct 2010
I am biased towards this movie since I'm really into the Kennedy Administration and stuff from the Cold War era. However, even if you're not interested in 60's period pieces, Thirteen Days has a lot to offer.
Historical dramas kind of go into it with a disadvantage: you know what's going to happen. While this disadvantage can be overcome with good moviemaking, it can still hinder attempts at suspense or drama. Titanic, for instance. No one liked it because they were surprised at the twist ending when the Titanic sank. They liked it because of the love story and the drama and all that stuff. Thirteen Days is the same. You know that the ending credits aren't going to be rolling after a billowing mushroom cloud over New York. It's good because it shows how close we came to nuclear war, the stress of those "thirteen days", and how people behave when they are on the brink.
Although it has flaws, I like this movie a lot.
