Review of Thirteen (2003) by Rachel B — 17 Jul 2009
Very truthful about peer pressure mostly from the female's side. It's hard for me to really get a grip on what alot of this is like (since I am a guy) but I have seen alot of this go down from the outsider looking in. Me are will always be physical bullies and anything we do in our circles involves that physicality if you cant take care of yourself physically or stand up for yourself that way you get bullied. With women it appears different its more social bullying or at the core mental bullying, Dane Cook is right women are mental ninjas and this more of a sparring the same way guys do it physically. it sucks but that is how things go.
As for the film I had a hard time really connecting with it (being a guy and being a outsider but unlike the main character I never wanted to be 'cool') but I understand it. However the film is just one blur after another stages the girl goes through before he absolute mental breakdown, was it really that bad to be the tony tailed girl she was at the end or just be some coke headed slut who slashes herself because event hough she has the popularity she can't stand the sight of herself. Go figure, this is a microcosm success at nearly any level.
