Review of Thirteen (2003) by Jeff H — 18 Aug 2009
Straight off the bat (as the Americans say) I'd like to state the fact that I have seen this film 5 times with different friends, it is that brilliant.
Groundbreaking in 2003 Thirteen tells the story of the development (corruption) of a thirteen year old girl (Evan Rachel Wood) by another thirteen year old (Nikki Reed) but also charts the relationship between Evan Rachel's parents as well as the danger of what conservative commentators call "Too much too young".
The most remarkable thing about this film though is the fact that the screenplay was written by Nikki Reed when she was just 14, yet it is a masterpiece. Filmed mostly on a low budget with (in most cases) a hand held camera and with most of the actors wearing their own clothes. It gives the most accurate depiction of teenage temptations and the influence of drink and drugs I have seen on film.
A word about the mother, Oscar winning actress Holly Hunter was certainly the best actress for the role. One can clearly imagine her as the 'cool' mum trying to adapt to her daughter rather than just accepting the changes.
In summary this film is a must see and a must own as well as the easiest 5 stars I have ever given.
