Review of Thirteen (1988) by Dave R — 26 Jan 2012
A disturbing film about the breakdown in modern families and the results it has on modern teens. the trend in child rearing, since the hippies of the 1960s started having babies, is to be more of a "friend" to children rather than an authority figure.
in this story when a teenage girl does whatever it takes to fit in her pseudo-hippie mom lacks the parenting skills to stop her child from coming close to destroying herself. the film is not an indictment of teens per se, but mainly an indictment of the lost art of parenting.
the teens in this film are just trying to do what comes nature: be cool and try to fit in. what's changed is the lengths they'll go to to do that and the failure of parents to rein in their children.
