Review of Think Like a Man Too (2014) by Nathan M — 29 Jun 2014
Or Think Like a Man Also...
So did we really need a sequel to director Tim Story's adaptation of Steve Harvey's book? Probably not. Does this film live up to how unexpectedly funny the original film was? Not really. Is this almost the exact same film, in terms of character development, as the first film, thus making this film completely useless? Yes. However, there are enough laugh out loud moments, you might enjoy this film on cable sometime.
It's definitely too long and doesn't have that inspired enthusiasm the first film had, so its length feels completely unnecessary, but if you were a big fan of the first film, you'll probably find things to laugh about here. Namely, Kevin Hart. Now, not his exposition-heavy narration that only serves to fill in the blanks for the meandering plot. Hart is best when he's allowed to be the wild card of the group. They keep his character development very limited, and that's what works best for him. I don't want him to be a real person, I like him better as a cartoon character.
Unfortunately, if you liked the "real" character moments in the last film, there's nothing new in that department in this film. Every character basically retreads the same ground in their personal growth that they did in the previous film. The characters that need to grow up, grow up (all over again), and the characters that need to learn to relax, learn to relax (all over again). As far as its premise and character development goes, this is a pretty awful film.
But is that really what you care about in this movie? Probably not. This movie has plenty of gags (not enough to justify its run time, but there are some good ones in there). This film even has a wacky, full-length music video, something that would have been genius in the hands of a stronger director, but there's some novelty to it, and it somewhat works here. You'll laugh, but not as much as you should for a near 2 hour film. It's good enough for cable, but not enough for a full ticket price.
