Review of Think Like a Man (2012) by Maksim B — 21 Jan 2013
Surprisingly entertaining and funny, Think Like A Man is a pleasantly cheesy, easy-going and engaging comedy. A wonderful blend of all types of modern Hollywood comedies, it offers diverse humor and sufficient laughs for everybody while it actually provides more than most could have expected.
With a marketing campaign which builds up awareness for a typical Tyler-Perry-Afro-American delivery, Think Like A Man is a much better comedy than most of the similar recent movies. It is as cliches as the rest, but it is much richer and solid in terms of content. It is a unique blend of a romantic comedy, buddy comedy, Afro-American comedy and on top of that it offers also plenty of black humor moments. This makes Think Like A Man one of the most diversified comedies and it literary has something for everybody.
It is not only the different laughs, but also the attractive, lively and very likeable cast that surprises. A minor flaw is that the huge cast makes the beginning of the movie quite confusing. First of all,it is pretty difficult to memorize who is who, and secondly the different couples/stories are presented in a faster than expected pace which makes the first twenty minutes very confusing. Still, director Tim Story manages to keep the attention of the audience and to provide formidable content for the remaining 100 minutes,by being focused on the main stories and not wasting unnecessary screen-time on excessive dramatizations or other sub-plot lines.
His overall approach is the third key to the success of Think Like A Man. The story and the characters are pretty contemporary and everybody seems to be an embodiment of a typical modern type of people. Thus, everyone could find himself in this whole story. In addition to this, there are plenty of sharp moments when social, cultural and even racial differences are being blown up by director Tim Story.
Despite its (disappointingly)restrained reception by the critics, Think Like A Man is a real crowd-pleaser. The best proof for this is its 91$ Mil. domestic gross with only 12$Mil budget. Think Like A Man is one of the better comedies of 2012 and definitely it is worth seeing it.
