Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Stefanie C — 06 Aug 2008
A great movie about redemption and copping with change. Benicio Del Toro achieves a career high as a recovering drug addict staying with the widow of his best friend. He takes his role to the shadows and makes us look them straight in the eyes, something only great actors can do.
Where was his Oscar nod last year? Hallee Berry is good not great as the widow, but you can see her character from a mile away. David Duchovny does excellent with what little he has, and I wish there were more scenes of him and Del Toro together.
The best thing about this movie is how it shows that the things we don't understand are more often then not synonymous with the things we hate. The most memorable scene of the movie is the ending, a stare-down with Del Toro intercut with Berry finally moving on.
A searing moment in a movie that sneaks into your head and captivates you.
