Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Stephen M — 01 Jan 2011
Benicio Del Toro is one of the finest actors of this generation and his depiction of a recovering heroin addict is moving, realistic and surprising while proving his acting depth. While his struggle to recover is the strong secondary plot, the main thread is how a recent widow and mother-of-two (a better-than-usual Halle Berry) deals with grief, adjusting to single parenthood and mourning her deceased husband (expertly depicted via flashback by David Duchovny).
An original screenplay that tells at least three great stories simultaneously, it's an excellent journey through the unpredictable stages of grief, the challenges of overcoming addiction and the hope of loyalty--this moving and powerful film is more than worthy.
