Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Mark S — 27 Nov 2011
Whenever I saw movies like Trainspotting, Rachel Getting Married or Requiem For A Dream, it always reminded me of the only time I saw a drug addict in my life. I was about 10 yrs old and had just got down from an early morning train at the CST station, Bombay and saw this guy, with a needle up his arm and cigarette butts strewn all around him, lying on the platform. That pathetic form is always seared in my mind, and this movie reminded me of him again.
Benicio Del Toro's performance as a heroin addict is fantastic, reminiscent of Ewan McGregor in Trainspotting or Jared Leto in Requiem for a Dream. Things We Lost In The Fire is sentimental, yes, tries hard to be a tearjerker, hell yes, but isn't depressing and twisted like Requiem for a Dream.
