Review of Things We Lost in the Fire (2007) by Tags Magilicuty — 09 Dec 2008
One of the best movies I've seen in awhile. While flipping through digital cable stations I stopped on it almost by accident. Usually I don't like Halle Berry's acting, but she won me over in this one.
The movie begins with Audrey Burke(Halle Berry) and Brian Burke (David Duchovny), an interracial couple with a 6 and 10 year old that are restoring their garage after a fire. One night David goes out to get ice cream for his children and hours go by.
Police pay a visit to their house to inform her that her husband was shot and killed while breaking up a domestic dispute. Weeks go by, emotions flow and Audrey decides to pay a visit to her husbands best friend and recovering heroine addict, Jerry Sunborne (Benicio Del Toro), who is recovering and working at a methadone clinic as a janitor.
They talk about her husband and after the visit she decides that she needs someone to help her cope with the grief and asks him to move into the guest house. Afterwards, it is a superb account of interpersonal relationships, addictions, emotions, family and friends.
Benicio and Halle put on some of the best performances of their careers and even made me cry like a bitch in parts.
