Review of Thin (2006) by Corey P — 06 Dec 2007
While it lacks the frills and style you get from some of the more experienced documentarians, this HBO produced look into a bulimia/anorexia clinic is a fantastic and underseen acheivement that earns its marks especially due to the second half. While it may seem watching it that you are not seeing a forward momentum of plot and just a character study, the way the relationships between these people develop makes it more than just a rehash of the same thing for 105 minutes.
As for the subject matter, its never sensationalistic or overly exploitative - it treats it seriously enough that this could be shown in high school health classes. At the same time, the way things are edited has SOME degree of entertainment value attached, which is inherent when you're dealing with stories that involve therapists and obsession. plenty of conflict, plenty of drama bombs, plenty of feeling sorry for someone, or being surprised by them, or in some cases being let down by people you think are doing well.
It may be a TV feature and look like one, but it deserves far more credit for what it accomplishes. I'd get it on DVD.
