Review of Thieves' Highway (1949) by Meghan D — 11 Feb 2009
Dassin is such an underrated director. He crafts wonderful films and this is no exception. Thieves Highway is sort of like a more modern Grapes of Wrath meets Hitchcock. The shots are incredible, the acting is solid (Lee J.
Cobb is wonderful), and the whole film is very grounded and real. Well, aside from the end. Thank you Hollywood for having wrap things up nicely and make the authorities all powerful leading to a cheeseball ending that is completely incongruous with the rest of the film.
