Review of Thieves' Highway (1949) by Ben H — 22 Apr 2012
Another Dassin noir/realist classic that deals with serveral layers of contemporaneous American society, from returning GIs disillusioned with what has happened during their absence, immigrant families trying to make a living in the face of corrupt businessmen, different generations, truck drivers, grifters, the middle class and prostitutes.
Dassin's cross-section is placed in a film with great perfromances from Conte and Cortese, whose performance verges on erotic, decent supporting cast, great script from Bezzerides and there are enough thrills and twists to keep anyone happy, all told with an underlying sense of humour that humanises the whole thing.
