Review of They Live (1988) by Tom P — 01 Nov 2009
If you can excuse the casting of former WWE faux-Scot sensation Rowdy Roddy Piper, there is plenty to get one's teeth into in this creepy, dark comedy on modern life and and all things vulgar in the 1980s.
Our pro-wrestler finds a pair of sunglasses that allows him to see the world for what it really is: a dystopia straight from the imagination of Bill Hicks. We are all drones, sleep-walking through our lives, consuming overpriced shit, and working for an elite race of skeletal, formaldehyde-faced capitalists.
Once you get over the extremely corny acting, bruising homoerotic fight scenes and Rowdy's extravagant mullet, you'll love this darkly comic gem. But be warned some of the dialogue is a bit weak, for example, when Rowdy announces 'I am here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, but I'm all out of gum!' Genius.
