Review of They Live (1988) by Shawn C — 30 May 2012
A condemnation of both capitalism and consumerism wrapped in a sci-fi package; They Live has a really interesting idea at its core, but the execution leaves a bit to be desired. A lot of the scenes feel unnecessarily protracted and an ending that could have been poignant ends up being more farce-like than anything else and nearly ruins the movie.
In the end, its the strength of the idea that keeps the movie afloat and paved the way for more films (The Matrix for example) that challenge our idea of reality.
