Review of They Live (1988) by Matt H — 11 Aug 2012
I found "They Live" to be absolutely brilliant... until they added the hardcore match between Roddy Piper and Keith David. It was, fun, I guess, but so mind bogglingly odd that I cannot help but comment on it.
Still, that does not keep "They Live" from being a really quality piece of late 80's cinema. It's "The Matrix", but set in a gritty city instead of a sleek cgi environment, and it makes the film all the more better.
Piper is surprisingly good, both when he is delivering cheeseball lines and when he's acting a little more serious. the makeup work on the aliens is also top notch. But the quality of the piece really comes from the way in which it presents the 'disguised world'.
I enjoyed the crap out of "They Live"!
