Review of They Live (1988) by Bill M — 17 Mar 2015
An incredibly relevant, fairly brutal satire on the 99 per cent, except it was made in the late 80's, the shallow geed culture of that decade now seems more predominant than ever, like this movie took a look into what would be, the obsession with nothingness, the lack of control in your own life, the encroachment of the system on the individual, the celebration of moronic, shallow, image and material obsessed pop culture, the ever widening class divide.
On top of that it's an hilarious, violent, brilliantly subversive sci-fi action thriller, with a healthy dose of black comedy, weirdness and much quotability ( I came here to chew bubblegum and kick ass, and i'am all out of bubblegum.
) and that's before you factor in Roddy Piper badassing up the place something awesome, and the most hilariously, pointlessly protracted fight scene ever filmed. Another John Carpenter masterpiece.
