Review of They Live (1988) by Samurai A — 01 Oct 2014
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass...and I'm all out of bubblegum."--Is the quote that is quite possibly the greatest quote ever made 'out of the ordinary' in a film!. If there was ever film that I had to describe what a cult film is best this one would win sky-high!.This film can make a person who hates cult films love them,I've actually seen it happen before!.What makes this film so wonderful?,The unbelievable philosophy behind it?,The fact that it's one of the "coolest" and "hip" films ever made?,The fact that it holds a very important message? or is it the fact that it contains one of the greatest fight scenes ever depicted on screen,if not the greatest!.
"John Nada" who is perfected by Wrestler "Roddy Piper" is everything an anti-hero in a film should be:Slick, cool, funny, tall, musculent, iconic and realistic. These elements are actually extremely hard to find in anti-heroes and that is why "John Nada" is one of the most important and overlooked anti-heroes ever put on film. The action in this film is sometimes over-the-top and that is why it is so enjoyable. The film's key aspect of aliens controlling us through the media, subliminal messages and ultimately consumerism is the reason why this is the greatest conspiracy film ever produced in my opinion. I've always ,as I have said in my "JFK" review hated conspiracy, but this film made me love it as it almost spoofs it in a way and at the same time delivers the world a important message, that "message" questions what role the media actually plays in our life,"John Carpenter" was the first to actually bring the conspiracy of the Illuminati to life in this film even though there is no reference of it in the film.
Who is "John Nada" actually?,is he an anti-hero,a homeless drifter?,or is the one of the greatest movie icons ever depicted on film?.The answer is that he is all in one and that is the reason why he is a legend in the cult cinema!."John Carpenter" once said in an interview that the reason why "Roddy Piper" was chosen as the lead is because he has been electrocuted once, stabbed three times before, been in a plane crash and been in many car crashes and the fact that he is a professional wrestler, which clearly is the reason why "John Nada" is one of the toughest and most realistic anti-heroes brought to screen. There is a very important and great friendship that develops between "Roddy Piper" and "Keith David" in the film and that is one of the hundred reasons why this is one of the greatest films ever made and one of my favorite movies of all time!.I absolutely love everything about this film!.
Its one of the most unique films ever made and is one that I can watch a hundred times over and it never gets old.Now that who was said by someone who hates conspiracy is hardcore proof why you should see this legendary Carpenter masterpiece!
