Review of They Call Me Mister Tibbs! (1970) by David S — 18 Jan 2008
Sequel to "In the Heat of the Night" that exchanges the earlier film's emphasis on social commentary with an emphasis on formulaic police procedure. The social subtext is indeed still there, but only not as potent or rich.
However, this would have been fine if the mystery that was being emphasized was strong enough to compensate for this loss. Unfortunately, as already mentioned, it is formulaic and the culprit is all too obvious.
Still, the acting is solid (especially by Landau) and the mere fact that it does contain a certain degree of social subtext already places it ahead of most of its ilk. A slight recommendation.
