Review of There's Only One Jimmy Grimble (2000) by Pauline L — 12 Sep 2009
This is a film with an all star British cast (Geena McKee, Ray Winston and Robert Carlyle) and a wonderfully whimsical storyline. A congenial but dramatically muddled comedy-drama about a young Mancunian who dreams of glory on his home turf.
Director John Hay develops each of his strands very fully and ensures that they are interwoven at just the right moments. The football sequences are involving, the film is shot through with a gentle humour and, as is always the case in underdog-makes-good films, you can't help rooting for Jimmy when he steps up for the footie finale.
