Review of There Will Be Blood (2007) by Mike S — 13 Aug 2016
An amazing example of acting by Daniel Day-Lewis in a somewhat thin story about an early-20th-century oilman who will stop at nothing to buy up land and drill wells. Sounding a bit like Jack Palance, Day-Lewis's character, Daniel Plainview, seems to hate everybody.
Even the people he should love, like his son H.W., come in for some rough treatment when they don't live up to Daniel's expectations. A thoroughly unlikable character, Daniel Plainview is also mesmerizing; you can't turn your eyes away.
If you do, you're likely to miss something, because there isn't a lot of dialogue in this film, which is all about gestures, body language, and facial expressions. A few key speeches let us glimpse Daniel's mind, but his actions speak much louder than his words.
