Review of Then She Found Me (2007) by Caro T — 10 Jul 2009
Did any of the reviewers actually read the book? The movie barely resembles the book!!!! April Epner was not married, was not pregnant. The love interest was not the parent of one of her students, he was the charming, introverted librarian.
Matthew Broderick's character was not in the book. Bernice had a colorful love interest. There was not adopted Chinese child. While I applaud Helen Hunt for venturing outside the role of actress into directing, I cannot applaud her for her distortion of Elinor Lipman's wonderfully quirky and charming story of a woman coming to terms with her roots and finding love.
When I learned Ms. Lipman's book was going to become a movie, and that Helen Hunt and Bette Midler were to be co-stars, I was excited, but 5 minutes into the movie, I realized that the only thing the movie has in common with the book is the title, and the names of the two main characters.
Very disappointed. A screenplay that followed the book more closely would have been a delightful movie that I would have loved. Sadly, it was a huge disappointment.
