Review of Thelma & Louise (1991) by Robin R — 08 May 2015
Great cast, fine director, total mismatch with topic.
Probably the most exciting, most clichéd movie you'll ever watch about emerging feminism. You know the format: misunderstood teeners get into bad situation, commit crime because no other option available, run from law, evade police for as long as possible, then drive off cliff while the one cop who understands them stands looking on.
Got news for ya: women aren't teens, and their problems are way more complex. And women don't grow out of their problems. Talk about infantalizing and blaming the victim!!!
I really hate the structure and plot. Loved the acting. Something this important deserves excitement, all right, but not formulaic melodrama.
For something a little more descriptive of women's problems of the time, see Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974). She ends up being saved by a man, but her problems are much more believable.
And why would a georgeous woman be in full professional makeup and dress, still living in such dowdy surroundings? She'd be spotted by some fat cat and lead a life perhaps no more fulfilling, but certainly a little more interesting. Culture miscue, IMHO.
