Review of Their Finest (2017) by Kevin A — 14 Apr 2017
This is a finely executed study in politics, morale during the Blitz, creative story telling and a bit of unexpected romance thrown in. Bill Nighy is a scene stealer as a senior citizen actor who is conscripted into supporting the British war effort as Hiltler bombs the hell out of London early on in WW II.
Gemma Arterton is well grounded and subtle as an aspiring script writer brought in to enhance the cinematic war effort and since the current films to support the Brits in 1940 are laughable and dismissed by the Brits at the cinema as unrealistic.
The film task for the crew is to make a film that is "authentic and inspiring" and that they do. Sam Claflin is excellent as the acerbic cynic first in the writers' room. Gemma has an awkward "marriage" to an expressionist artist who is a burden and full of self doubt, yet she is devoted to him to her huge disappointment later.
This is a fine film that will wear well in the canon of WW II related telling.
