Review of The Zookeeper's Wife (2017) by Travis G — 06 Apr 2017
Despite what critics say about The Zookeepers Wife, the film has some remarkable elements of film making and some pretty cute animals too.
First, Jessica Chastain brilliantly plays the lead in the film taking on the challenge of a polish accent and a scene after emotional scene right out of the gate. Chastain brings her character to life with an intensity and vulnerability that augments the film greatly. Acting from Daniel Brül and Johan Heldenbergh are decent as well.
Second, the filming itself was pretty good throughout the movie. Scenes with the animals in first parts of the movie were very well done and realistic. The way that the film also showed a girl being taken into an ally by German soldiers and then coming out beaten and clearly raped was also a very gut wrenching and well done emotional tactic by director Niki Caro.
The writing was very well wrtitten, containing factual and realistic occurrences at the zoo.
There were however some weaknesses to The Zookeepers wife. At times, scenes that should have gone on longer seemed to be cut short which may have been an issue with the editing of the movie. It also can't be ignored that there were some holes and unanswered questions that arose when it came to helping the harbored Jews escape. Despite what has been said, The Zookeepers Wife is a movie worth seeing of heroic heroes pushing back against the Nazi regime.
