Review of The Zookeeper's Wife (2017) by Nate Z — 12 Apr 2017
Heartbreak ... Histoy is heartbreaking. I'm home form the theaters and I'm still shaking from the emotional investment that was that film.
The history involved in this film is one we have seen in films over and over again but the creation of this story was beautifully sensitive to the topic. The film knows their audience's education of the history is present with each scene they watch unfold. The one scene that had me gasping at its brilliance and sensitivity was when the son simply states that it is snowing on a day they already defined as Passover. The films ability to let the audience understand what those two thing combine meant for the story truly shows the filmmakers acknowledgement of a smart audience.
My heart breaks for the real life people that had to live through these events and I applaud the actors who brought such an emotionally heavy performance to allow us to feel as they did in these times. Moments of personal conflict could be seen in the way the couple touched each other. Throughout the film the amount of closeness the couple had or didn't have brought us into the marriage and how the war took a toll on their love and their family.
History is heartbreaking. Stories like this should be told. The Warsaw Zoo is now on my list of places I need to visit. To pay my respects to the brave humans who simply just wanted to be good to other humans.
