Review of The Zone (2007) by Serdar C — 25 Feb 2008
The director shows us what the movie is all about with the openning shot, camera travels and shows us The Zone and finally the world out of The Zone over the high walls. The walls separate the zone from Mexico and the riches from the poors.
The Zone is a big site where rich peole live in their beautiful houses guarded by their private security. When three young Mexicans somehow break in the zone to steal and end up killing one old lady, two of them get killed by the guards and one of them manages to escape but not too far as he is still in the zone and cannot get out.
The people in the zone, they have a good reason why they are living separated from the community, they think it's not safe out there for them and their children, the crime rate is high and the police is corrupted. But when they face with the crime, they use the power of money to be the police and the judge and the executioner. Of course there are people amongst them who disagree but who listens to a few caring adults, they need an eye for an eye.
To tell you that the kid that survives won't make it out of the zone and that he will be beaten to death when found by the people in the zone is not a spoiler, as it's obvious already. One honest cop and a few humane character won't be enough to change this fact. This movie takes place in Mexico but the zone can be in any of the countries in the world, and if you think on a larger scale, the zone could be a country, in fact The country, if you think Mexico is the world.
