Review of The Zero Theorem (2013) by Alan W — 18 Oct 2013
Never had I find a film so visually interesting and witty, well performed and directed, and yet the narrative so head-scratchingly incoherent. Themes here feel vaguely familiar and have certainly been better dealt with before; even in his own films - for this could be described as a more satirical update of Brazil or a less action-packed/thrilling Twelve Monkeys.
Ironic then, for a film that ponders upon the question of the meaning of existence is somewhat a meaningless mess. But in spite of all this, the film whizzes by and I had a thoroughly enjoyable time watching it unfolds on its own twisted logic: entertaining it most certainly is.
But what does it all means, I had no idea, perhaps just like life itself - though I hardly think that is the filmmaker's intentions.
