Review of The Zero Theorem (2013) by Chris C — 21 Aug 2014
While the visuals displayed in Gilliam's dystopian universe echo his past work (Brazil & Twelve Monkeys) and conjure goosebumps in the process, The Zero Theorem's meaning is far too muddled to digest - at least this is certainly the case from only one viewing.
The production, set and costume design are flawless and allow you to fall into the world Gilliam is showcasing on screen with ease. However, the ramshackle narrative leaves a lot to be desired, I feel a little more coherency would have made this film increasingly more enjoyable.
The actors are all brilliant - From Waltz to Damon, from newcomer Lucas Hedges to David Thewlis and while Gilliam is certainly at his most Gilliam-esque in terms of his direction, unfortunately, this feels more like a motley crew of half baked theories than one succinct "theorem".
