Review of The Young Victoria (2009) by Ewoudt C — 03 Aug 2010
The Young Victoria's greatest achievement as a worthy slice of period drama is director Jean-Marc Vallee's supreme ability to imbue the story with a high level of accessibility, without doing any harm to the genre's reputation for providing movie-goers with a heavy emotional character studies that says just as much about the historic figures they are based upon as the period they represent.
This results in a brisk, light but powerful story that benefits from a strong performance by Emily Blunt and the rest of her supporting cast members. Vallee's approach to the story might however sadly alienate more seasoned movie-goers, expecting a deeper, less forgiving take on Queen Victoria's first few years of reign.
Nevertheless, a commendable and surprisingly modern approach to the drama that comes highly recommended.
